During camp hours, parents can reach us by email, or by calling/text messaging (281) 940-8199.
For general questions about the camp, please email email@example.com.
Who should attend?
-Experienced tournament players
-Those who have had some chess instruction
-Those who wish to be challenged
Full day camps are good for advanced players or older students. We provide a full day (with two short breaks and a lunch break) of chess instruction, training exercises, and chess play. This might be too much chess for the younger or less experienced player.
Half day, or “Morning Session” camps are best for younger students or those who have other commitments in the afternoon.
Jeffrey Ashton: USCF Master, full-time professional chess instructor, founder and owner of the Panda Chess Academy.
Additional instructors may join the camp to help teach.
Assistant on Staff
A paid assistant with child-care experience will be on staff at all times, here to focus on your child’s needs.
The camps are held at Panda Chess Academy, a full time chess academy and tournament site for scholastic chess players (Kindergarten–12th). We provide chess sets, clocks, notation sheets, pencils, worksheets, and other chess equipment. Child-safe computers and tablets are used for chess training exercises, study, and game analysis.
We provide written exercises and notes that are custom-made for our students. Written exercises are assigned for both classwork and for students to take home. We provide books for students to use and borrow.
Students play many training games. All training games are unrated, but they are played in tournament-like conditions, using United States Chess Federation rules. We require students to notate their games so instructors can give detailed feedback.
At each camp we use new material so repeat campers will learn new things.

Training games are closely observed so instructors can provide detailed advice for each student. Customized opening feedback is available because we study the player’s notated training games. Students are encouraged to bring notated games played in tournaments or at home. We aim to learn as much as possible about each student’s strengths and weaknesses so we can best help the student improve.
Snacks and Lunch
We offer many snack options, and we provide bottled water. Students are also welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks. Students must bring their own lunch. A microwave is available.
We ask that students do not bring any nut-based foods due to allergies.
About the Panda Chess Academy Summer Training Programs
The Panda Chess Academy has been in Houston for over 10 years in the same building. This is our 11th year offering these camps. The Panda Chess Academy is a full-time scholastic chess school and tournament playing site and we are affiliated with the United States Chess Federation. Over 600 United States Chess Federation scholastic tournaments have been hosted at Panda Chess Academy. Over 100 different players enter the doors of Panda Chess Academy weekly for tournaments and instruction. Our students compete in State, National, and World championships.
The academy is located in a modern office building shared with several respectable corporations. The academy consists of 4 rooms that are cleaned daily by professional cleaning staff. The building is air conditioned during business hours. Restrooms and water fountains are on site.
Students are expected to show great behavior and perfect sportsmanship at all times. Any disrespect for others will not be tolerated. Our camps attract passionate chess players who are kind to others. These camps are a great opportunity for chess players to learn and play a lot, but we really emphasize Focus, Sportsmanship, and Safety (this has been our “motto” since we opened).
